Broken nails

On split skin
Red mixed white
Frothy pink

First date - last date
Always like this
Resisting kisses

Warm issue cooling
In passions blood
She's lain past sleep

Mumbled Query

And yes, I see,
That is quite deep
But is it deep enough
Will it truly suffice,
For this task at hand
Or has it all been in vain?

Do not disturb

Heavy lids and fogged mind
Slow descent to a better place
Wrapped and snuggled

So sharply back

To reach out and grasp
Liquid painkiller; gasping guzzle
And settle once more
To drift again, down down down

Wakened again - a whiplash bolt
As tiny teeth nip and nibble
Within a rag and cardboard nest
Rat infested home on derelict street

Fridge Space

Wrapping and packing
Black plastic bags bound tight
A little more space in this freezer to fill
A foot or so to go…

She’d be proud
With it all neatly stacked
And I’ve mopped and cleaned
And nearly finished…

Just a few more choice pieces
I’ll have some for tea
Maybe tongue…

And her heart?
Well there’s fridge space for that
It’ll feel at home there…

It’s for the best

Leaden feet, lead on
Lead on
Clump sullenly, senselessly
Down rickety creaking stairs
Drag shoulder and elbow jarringly
Past flaky painted doorframe
Thrown momentarily askew
Muffled stomp along carpeted hallway
And out through that thick
Heavy Victorian door
A two step garden
Brush by barely hanging gate
One step across suburban pavement
Over curb-stone into road
To stop midway
And lay ones weary head
It’s for the best.

Seen

Scuffed and worn
Sun faded patches
Furniture dark spots
Lacquered boards
Of waiting room floor
Unseen by those fearful
Ignored by those bold
Seen only by children
And cleaners

Care

See him,
See him stumble along
All rags and bags and beer bottles

See him stoop
And grasp
A morsel found
Chocolate bar
From gritty ground

See him lift and furtively place
Morsel found into bearded face
And chew

See him chew and stare
At you; as you draw near
And fetid breath drifts on air
It dawns, not chocolate
But doggy doo…

Abrade

Exert control
Again and again
Each little “could you?”
Every “would you?”
In that tone of “Now!”
