This life continues
40 years of history
40 more to make
On it plods
Good times
Bad times
Drifting
Deciding
But
What if it’s a dream?
When I wake
Where on this journey will I be?
Will it be this journey?
What will be reality?
And when I sleep again?
Dream another life…?
Over 25000 lives…
40 years of history
40 more to make
On it plods
Good times
Bad times
Drifting
Deciding
But
What if it’s a dream?
When I wake
Where on this journey will I be?
Will it be this journey?
What will be reality?
And when I sleep again?
Dream another life…?
Over 25000 lives…

ah, you have me pondering over 25000 lives. I'm astounded that it's such a manageable imaginable figure.
now I want to know is it prejudice to think dreams are not reality? thought provoking poem, inconsequential.
ES - the idea of doing this once fills me with dread, so many more 'fake' times is just hell.
To wake up, and find none of it was relevent to anything...
No friends or enemies made.
No deeds accomplished.
No worthwhile struggle and strife.
All the pointless self sacrifices.
All nothing...
I shall look up Hilary - one day soon.
Ian - in todays world it's quite a lot more, potentially. Based the figure on about 365 days for 70 years, rounded down for roundness.
If you want dreams to pose an alternative reality for their duration, well, feel free...
After all reality is somewhat on the subjective perspective side, if we both stood in the same room, chances are our realities would still differ slightly...
or rather our perception of such would.
Wow. I was braced for a slow spiral into some dark ending...and it didn't happen. I find myself surprised. :)
Now I'm wondering about reincarnation. I think I like it. This made me think; thank you.
With those few words, so well put, you have inspired even more ideas than we have lives to ponder them.
this is so my reality ..
is it just a dream ?
or is there more ?
sometimes to scary to think too deeply about
like this a lot, and tis most relevant to a few of us at this moment in time. have you read 'the post-birthday world' by lionel shriver? we can go so many ways. we do. in parallel worlds. we sip sherry together in one...remember?
This is interesting and prompts thoughts of parallel realities, reincarnation, the what if's of changing just one thing....
the sleeper must awake...."
I LOVE the idea of 25000 lives. What a wonderfully ponderous post. Thanks so much.
Penelope, what is there to 'like' about reincarnation? If you are never told your previous misdeeds how can amends be made and repition avoided?
We have enough agreement about reality to fly jet planes and do brain surgery. It seems to me that that is a lot to go on, although reality, (like God) cannot be finally proved as other than the dream. Another intriguing poem, inc.
More so, what if we are actually the dream – if our lives were purely the consequence of some unknown being’s subconscious ponderings. Should we then revel in the 25000, or should we pause a moment to hope that the being does not wake up while we are in the middle of a “good part”…
Very intriguing -if one believes in reincarnation, you have at least nine chances to get it right. But it's all relative and dreams sometimes can appear so real. Still I'd hate to wake up and find this life was a dream.
I don't think I'd like that, this life has been dreamy. Made me think :)
Am I dreaming the dream, or is it dreaming me? I really enjoyed this poem...and the 25000 really made me think.
In, reincarnation was good to you my friend;)
Wonder if it is even worth figting so hard for....am I rambling yes....
yes....
no....
maybe...
I had come here before this but blogger didn't let me comment..:D
Hindus believe in re-incarnations. That happens according to our Karmas.
In a way, I relate to this.
Thanks for your comments..
:)
it wasn't meant to be reincarnation.
The idea of reincarnation is nearly as abhorrent to me, but not quite. At least the accept reality remains the same with reincarnation, it's merely the body that changes, the dream thing has the possibility of being much worse...
Very very thought provoking--as is evidenced by the variety of comments made. I certainly hold with those who find multiple lives, esp. at the same time (sort of) quite scary. And I loved your response to ES about the real horror of awaking to find that this life with all its trials and errors had netted no successes or friends and had been meaningless/irrelevant being too horrible to even consider.
Excellent, provokative post.
