Flickerbox

Shining light,
That guides us,
Showing the way,
.
Teaching us,
How to live,
How to love,
.
How to wallow in others misery,
How to lie, cheat and steal,
How to hate, fight and kill,
.
Oh shining light,
That guides us,
What will you teach us today?

Spot on.

Although you missed "being insufferably smug at the same time".

No, really I am pleased as it is. Nice bit of symmetry too.

Actually this is growing on me even more.

I am wondering what meaning you are intending... I can think of a few. Good old poetry, eh?

What do you intend by the title?

Hmmm! A real grower!

That was what suddenly seemed to become clear as I read the title after commenting first time. (I know, appalling not to read it properly, and very rude to an author, but I like to get a whistlestop impression of a piece before really thinking about it...)

I confess on initial reading I thought it to be commentary on religion rather than television.

Then I couldn't decide if I liked it more that way or not! (Again, sorry!)

Consider me to be suitably chastised; I will religiously read your titles from now.

(Aside: I don't know how important you consider the title to be, but would be interested.)

lol, chris, it matters not what i mean it to be, and bothers me not how you percieve it.
I enjoy writing at the moment, well, sort of...
I merely hope people enjoy? reading 'em...

I think I had a pop at religion a while back, whilst I have nothing against the average religous person I do detest the organisation, and fanatical? zealous? individuals...
this one

I must admit, flickerbox as a title does seem to imply religion, but then, it doesn't actually say TV either.

Hmmm, my view on titles...err, pretty much the same as poems really, never quite sure what to put...often I don't want a blatant title, ie television as a title would have lost a spot of the minor ambiguity that I wanted, but at the same time, i kinda want television to be the answer to those wanting to know the meaning.
And few people think the same as each other, so mayhap my slight twist of title has twisted too far...oh well.

gosh, looks a little long this comment, so I'm off!

thanks for the visit though :)

oh, a quote i found, but can't remember whose, sums my view up entirely....

"A poem should not mean - but be."

there you go.

this reminds me of a the the song (i think) which opens with a child whispering 'satellite, oh satellite , that sits upon our skies, how deep do you see when you look into our lives?'

i have submitted to your request and will go the bakers dozen with rebecca

TV is a religion. At least it is a priesthood and physically resembles an altar as well. It mediates truth, works as the oracle that guides lives. Where it actually guides to . . . you've said so aptly in the poem. :-)

just noticed a typo in previous comment
'I must admit, flickerbox as a title does seem to imply religion'
should have read as 'doesn't'

oh well, i suspect people read it as it was meant..

TV does become a kind of dictating god in a box, and Ish is correct, they do tend to form little altars to media...

Alas I grew weary of the bad news, the depressing lives of soap characters, and banal american comedies, come to think of it the english ones were not really much better, and of course the pure mindlessness of quiz shows.
oh, and i've never liked sports...
So, apart from the occasional film, which at least is usually pure escapism (the type I like), the flickering 50mhz tube was a pointless focal point in the room.

In most houses, TV sets have replaced the fireplace as the focal point. Now, I know I shouldn't play with fire anymore, the nice policemen asked me not to, apparently it's classed as arson when done like that!, but, I'd rather stare at a raging fire than an electronic flick book...
