Once was Worshipped

There it stands,
In seething jungle,
A temple.

Lonely edifice,
Tall and scarred,
Scoured by the winds of ages.

Sightless windows wreathed with vines,
Crumbling walls,
Moss infected,
And lichen flaked,
Assaulted on all sides with teeming life.

Ancient construction,
Brittle with time,
Created long ago,
Once had purpose,

There I stand.
Life is a jungle,
My body is this temple.

Is it the temple itself that 'once was worshipped' or the departed God/god? Either way the tragedy is powerfully present in the imagery of the poem.
Humans as temple is Biblical imagery too. 'Don't you know you are God's temple and that God's Spirit dwells in you?'
1 Corinthians 3:16

I was aiming for old age...
The old person ignored and unseen as such in the midst of new generations...

So i guess, the temple and the god are one, and both neglected and forgotten :)

Just out of interest, do you have to look up your quotes or are you one of the few who actually know that book...

This reminds me of Apocalypto (the Mel Gibson movie). I'm envisioning an old Incan (or Mayan?) temple of some sort.

Thinker - was aiming more for an English temple, preferably inner city...that's the coldest part as a rule...

I suppose we all have these threads of connection with things we have seen and read. Mostly I do not know quotes word for word but close enough to find quickly by key word on a site like this.
