A Truth

Trust me not
I warn you now
For fickle is my nature
Self and I are all I serve
Forewarned you are
To trust me not

The lines may be about you inc., but I think they have universal application too. Is there a moral structure worthy of the name that starts with the self and can provide by that a foundation for others? And yet you do have a measure of my trust despite your caution. What C S Lewis calls the 'tao' inevitably shows its hand. Our blogging 'conversation' has been sustained over enough time that I have seen the tao in your 'hand' fairly consistently.

I agree Ish, pretty much a universal thing...

tao? guess it's research time again :)

It'd be fair to say, I have time for others after all my current needs have been met...but when shove comes to push it's me first :) Though these day my lil' monkey does usually come first, but I can justify that it respect to the piece that she is a responsibility I have accepted and prioritise, so therefore I am serving self by serving hers.

Your honesty becomes you. There are those who hold we are incapable of any genuine altruism, it is always selfishness in disguise. I would say we are called to that unselfishness and as my Christian perspective would have it, we are given by Christ the capability to attain unselfishness, which is otherwise impossible.
Of course we are all 'works in progress' and my motives I regret to say are never entirely pure. The Tao Lewis borrowed from Chinese Taoism. A shorthand term for intrinsic affinity for the good and noble inherent and in all men (to varying degrees) though largely warped, perverted and in need of repair/replacement.

I think you do better than most Ish.
Your motives might not be pure, but I'd like to think they have a moral sense and a little honour.

Hmmm, also, as a non christian/non believer, who gives me my will to be unselfish?

Oh, hang on, I don't actually aspire to unselfish, it's just chaff from my wheat...
